A traditional Ethiopian spice blend that's both fiery in heat and excellent in flavor. Commonly used for meats, vegetables, and lentils. Berbere seasoning is also a main ingredient for flavoring stews of meat, known as doro wat, wats or we’ts (stew with Ethiopian-spiced chicken). Use to make a marinade by combining 2 Tbsp. Berbere seasoning with 1 cup olive oil and ⅓ cup lemon juice in a blender and puree. Spread onto meat of choice and marinate overnight.

Flavor Profile

This paprika-based spice blend is bittersweet, garlicky, and sweet-spiced, with peppery notes and medium-hot heat.

How to Use

If you like food super spicy, try using Berbere seasoning in place of where you'd use regular curry powder. Use on beef, vegetables, tofu, duck, and lentils. To make a paste, mix equal parts spices, oil, and hot water and use as a base for sauces.

About This Blend

Our version of Berbere is less complex than traditional Ethiopian blends, but still packs a spicy and flavorful punch. Folklore holds that the hotter and more delicious a woman’s Berbere spices are, the more highly regarded she was as a potential wife.
